Dental Implants Icon
Oral implantology is the area of Dentistry that deals with dental rehabilitation due to tooth loss, with the main objective of recovering the aesthetics and functionality of the oral cavity.

Dental implants are placed in bone tissue with the intention of replacing lost teeth. Most dental implants are made of titanium, as they are biocompatible materials that bond to bone physically and chemically during the osseointegration process and are also resistant and durable. It is very important that after placement, the relevant dental implant care is taken.

Dental Implants Treatment
Before placing an implant, it is essential to know the shape, quality and dimensions of the bone where it will be housed. Therefore, the first phase is that of diagnosis and treatment plan. In this stage, the patient's oral cavity condition is evaluated.

To accurately choose the best type of implant, it is necessary to perform radiological tests that provide detailed information about the available bone. In case the patient does not have sufficient bone support to house the implant, bone regeneration surgery can be opted for.

Once the type of implant is chosen, the second phase consists of the surgical act of placing the implant under local anesthesia. Once the intervention is completed, the osseointegration period elapses, which can last from 3 to 6 months depending on the case and the location of the implant. To know if the implant has integrated in a stable and durable way in the bone, the dentist performs control X-rays.

In the last stage, called the prosthetic phase, impressions are taken to make the mold that allows making the custom prosthesis and several fitting tests are carried out before final placement.

In case the patient lost several teeth, the rehabilitation is done with bridges supported by implants. The process is similar to the previous one, except that the bridge replaces the intermediate teeth.
Dental Implant Procedure

How to recover teeth that have been lost?

According to each patient's particular case, the procedures that exist to replace lost teeth are the following:

  • Fixed artificial teeth, which are located on the implant itself and cannot be removed.
  • Dental prostheses screwed onto implants, which can only be removed by the dentist if you wish to control or hygienize their structure.
  • Removable dental prostheses, which are attached to dental implants to provide greater retention and stability, but can be removed if the patient wishes.

Dental implant care

If the patient correctly follows the dentist's indications, the postoperative period should not present any complications. To place the definitive prosthesis on the implant, it is necessary to wait a few months, not counting the healing period and the removal of the sutures.

The main dental implant care after the intervention are the following:

  • If bleeding from the wound persists, a dry gauze can be placed on the area, pressing it for about 20 minutes. If blood loss continues, it is replaced with another clean gauze following the same procedure.
  • Do not ingest food until the effect of anesthesia completely disappears, which is usually between 4 and 6 hours after the surgical intervention.
  • During the first days, it is advisable to follow a soft diet with food at room temperature.
  • Almost immediately the area of the dental implant becomes inflamed. To reduce discomfort, cold can be applied from outside the oral cavity and analgesics or anti-inflammatories can be used, following the dentist's instructions.
  • Avoid tobacco and alcohol, as this is one of the most significant risk factors that can cause dental implant failure.
  • Maintain a strict and adequate oral hygiene routine, using an ultrasoft surgical brush. The day after the intervention, rinses can be done gently with warm water and salt or with mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine (under dentist's prescription).
  • When sleeping, keep the head at a higher level than the rest of the body.
  • Do not perform physical efforts during the week after surgery.
